Is Royal Enfield the World's Oldest Motorcycle Brand?

Royal Enfield probably is the world's oldest "surviving" motorcycle brand..
I have been hearing about this for sometime now. So I decided to find it out the truth. Is Royal Enfield really the world's oldest motorcycle brand?
Imagine if Royal Enfield models gets the tag of "Manufactured by the World's Oldest Motorcycle Brand..!!"

.. who wouldn't want to own a piece of history like that?
After some "Googling" on the net, the following facts came into light:
  • Triumph started to produce motorcycles in 1902
  • Harley-Davidson started making motorcycles in 1903
Now there are some guys who say that Royal Enfield made its first motorcycle in 1901..!! The photo posted below is claimed as that of the first Royal Enfield motorcycle manufactured in 1901.

If it is true then that would definitely make Royal Enfield the world's oldest surviving motorcycle brand..!!
1901 Royal Enfield

More about that later.. but first,

A brief history of Royal Enfield:

1893: The Origins

Royal Enfield was founded in 1893 in Redditch, Worcestershire, England; as "Royal Enfield Manufacturing Co. Ltd." with the trademark "Made Like a Gun".
Prior to that it was started by a gentleman called George Townsend as "George Townsend & Co." in 1851. It manufactured objects as diverse as sewing needles and fish hooks, bicycles.

It was sold off in 1891 to Albert Eadie and R.W. Smith, and renamed as "The Eadie Manufacturing Company Limited", the firm made bicycles and also started supplying precision rifle parts to the "Royal Small Arms Factory" in Enfield, Middlesex. Soon a new company called "The Enfield Manufacturing Company Limited" was created to market these new design "Enfield" bicycles.1892, Enfield BicycleThe following year the word Royal (after the Royal Small Arms Company) was added and thus "Royal Enfield" came into being in 1893.

1899-1971: The beginning and end in the UK

Royal Enfield made motorized tricycles, quadricycles and even cars during the initial years. Later it started to make motorcyces of all types. 2 strokes, v-twins even triple cylinder models. The single cylinder, 4 stroke "Bullet" was first launched in 1933.1933 Royal Enfield BulletIn the mid and late 1960's, the once mighty British motorcycle industry could not withstand the invasion of the Japanese brands. Royal Enfiled also had to wrap up its business in England in 1971.

1949-2000: Royal Enfield Bullet arrives and thrives in India

Royal Enfield motorcycles had been sold in India since 1949. In 1955, the Indian government ordered a batch of 800 350cc Bullets its police and army.

Enfield IndiaIn 1955, the Redditch company partnered Madras Motors in India and formed "Enfield India" to assemble, under licence, the 350 cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Madras (presently Chennai).

In 1994, Eicher group acquires "Enfield India Company". The company name is changed to "Royal Enfield Motors Limited".

2010: Alive and kicking in India.. exported worldwide..!!Royal Enfield Classic 350

Coming back to the earlier question:

Did Royal Enfield make a motorcycle in 1901? If the answer is "Yes" then Royal Enfield, India has a potential goldmine which it should definitely utilize.

Imagine if Royal Enfield models like the Classic 500/350 gets the tag of "Manufactured by the World's Oldest Motorcycle Brand..!!", wouldn't that make the Royal Enfield models even more desirable and possibly increase its sales 3 to 4 times (at least worldwide if not in India)? After all who wouldn't want to own a piece of history like that?

But the Royal Enfield (India) website doesn't mention anything about the 1901 motorcycle model in its History page. In fact in the official website, the first mention about a motorcycle is made in 1909. So is Royal Enfield India not sure of the existance of the 1901 model?
Royal Enfield History
On the other hand, Royal Enfield UK Site mentions that Royal Enfield had produced its first motorcycle in 1901 and that it is the world's longest running motorcycle brand.

There are also some die hard Royal Enfield fans like Mr. Jorge Pullin from LA, USA (he has been keeping a blog dedicated to covering anything about Royal Enfield..!!) who also mentions that Royal Enfield had made its first motorcycle in 1901.

Jorge Pullin
Just visit his blog to know things about Royal Enfiled that probably you did not know.

Royal Enfield Bullet, the world's longest running production model..??

According to what I have come across on a couple of sites (click here), the Bullet is the world's longest running production model.

Now if that is true as well, somebody should wake up the marketing dept. of Royal Enfield India! Shouldn't such powerful and potent brand associations and rich heritage be marketed as well?

4Royal Enfield Classic 500 upgraded + Classic Chrome & Desert Storm launched in India

Royal Enfield improves its Classic 500 range.. also launches new Color variants expanding the Classic 500 family in India..
When every other bike is trying to become the next "fastest Indian", the Royal Enfield Classic is like a "Strong, silent & mature character".

To me the Royal Enfield Classic tops the list of "Best Looking Motorcycles in India". And now the Royal Enfield Classic 500 in the new "Desert Storm" color (posted below) is the epitome of Indian Motorcycle Art.
Royal Enfield (Classic 500) Desert Storm
I have always visualized the Royal Enfield rider as "Buddha on two wheels". Some people might say that Royal Enfield is the poor (Indian) man's Harley. But to me these two brands are poles apart.

As a brand Harley Davidson (to me) is about living the American dream and a statement of making it big in life (In India). Royal Enfield on the other hand is about being the proud & confident global Indian with strong desi roots/identity.

What's been upgraded in the new Classic 500 range?

Apart from carefully nurturing and building a cult around the Royal Enfield Brand (It's not just the Bullet brand anymore), the guys at Royal Enfield has been taking customer feedback seriously and as a result the Classic 500 has received a few changes/upgrades.

Changes to the new Classic 500 range includes:
  • Change in the attachment of the front forks to the wheel (which was earlier slightly offset, thus altering the steering rake angle)
  • Wider rear tyre (120 section compared to the older 110 section)
  • Bigger diameter front wheel (19 inch front compared to the 18 inch for the older Classic 500)
  • Remapped EFI system
  • Two new colors: "Desert Storm" & "Chrome (with combination of either Black or Maroon)"

Royal Enfield (Classic 500) Desert StormRoyal Enfield Classic (500) Chrome
The changes might be small but it shows that Royal Enfield is not an archaic entity any more but transforming itself to a modern organization which is on its path of continuous improvement.

The small changes to the front forks, larger diameter frot wheel and a wider rear tyre should make the steering and stability of the Classic 500 improve. I had come across reports that the initial Classic 500 had some issues with its EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection). The new remapped EFI seems to be a genuine effort to iron out these teething issues.

Altered "front fork - wheel" mounting in the new Classic 500:

Pricing
  • Classic 500: Rs. 1.55 lakhs (On-Road Mumbai)
  • Classic Desert Storm: Rs. 1.58 lakhs (On-Road Mumbai) i.e. Rs. 3,000 more than the Classic 500
  • Classic Chrome: Rs. 1.68 lakhs (On-Road Mumbai) i.e. Rs. 10,000 more than the Classic 500
Since its launch in 2009 the Royal Enfield Classic (500/350) has been available in 3 colors: Green (Bluish-Green or Turquoise), Maroon & Black.

In the 2010 New Delhi Auto Expo, Royal Enfield had shown the Classic 500 in "Chrome" & "Battle Green" colors. Subsequently Royal Enfield did start production of these two colors but only as export models.

The Classic Chrome wasn't difficult to introduce in India but Royal Enfield couldn't sell the "Battle Green" color to the common Indian as it was a color reserved for the Indian Military..!!

The association of Royal Enfield with the Indian Army/Police dates back to the 1950's and this has only helped build on the Macho aura of Royal Enfield in India. There are many enthusiasts who paint their Royal Enfield bikes in Green shade for the experience and attitude of going to battle without joining the military.

Since it wasn't possible to to sell the color reserved for the Indian military, the guys at Royal Enfield turned up with this beautiful "Desert/Sandy" color theme which is also "military"/"khaki". According to me the Desert Storm color is even better than the Battle Green color and is seriously making me drool over it..!!

Royal Enfield To Launch Bullet Classic C5 By 2010 In India

royal enfield bullet classic c5 Royal Enfield To Launch Bullet Classic C5 By 2010 In IndiaAs we already reported earlier, Royal Enfield owned by Eicher-Motors will be treating Indian with its new much-awaited international models including the new Bullet Classic C5 by 2010. Popular models sold in the US include Bullet G5 Classic (EFI), Bullet G5 Military and Bullet 500 Deluxe.
Royal Enfield is currently working on the changes to meet the Indian conditions and people over here already customized their bullets by local workshops to sport the looks of its International variants. There is a dormant demand for the International models of Royal Enfield in India. These models are homologized in Europe and the US to meet their specific rules and regulations connected to emissions and safety.
Royal Enfield will leverage on the success of its Thunderbird motorcycle by launching two models based on the same engine platform. Both the motorcycles are expected to be introduced by March 2010. Thunderbird is its most popular model in the metros. It sells 600 units monthly. In the non-metros, Bullet Electra – which also has the same engine category – sells about 1,000 units a month. Almost 90 per cent of its sales in the domestic market are through 350cc bikes.
The Chennai-based company will also increase the annual production capacity from 44000 units to 60000 per annum by next year. The investment for increasing would worth Rs 25 Crores

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500cc Coming Soon

Royal Enfield is said to be working on an exclusive 500cc Thunderbird. The new Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500cc is expected to roll out in the first quarter of 2012.
We do not expect any changes in the engine. The 500cc engine that thumps the Royal Enfield Classic 500cc will be used. We hope the new Thunderbird would be given a bit more thump. Royal Enfield has a strong portfolio in India. It basically comes down to your choice and budget. With the inclusion of the Thunderbird 500cc the current portfolio will be expanded.
The Enfield Thunderbird model currently rolls out in a 350cc format. The new 500cc Thunderbird is expected to be priced around Rs 1.6 – 1.9 lakh

Royal Enfield India once also made Scooters & Mopeds..!!

Royal Enfield India once also made Scooters & Mopeds..!!
Compilation of a couple of rare Royal Enfield models of yore..
A lot of changes have taken place at Royal Enfield during the last couple of years. Most significant of these changes has been replacing the nearly 50 year old cast iron engine (which had a separate gear casing) with a modern Unit Construction Engine (UCE). The characteristic thump of the single cylinder engine might have been slightly muffled due to the new UCE engine but nevertheless it’s still a 4 stroke thump.

What might surprise / even shock many is that once upon a time Royal Enfield India dabbled in a couple of 2 stroke models, among which there used to be a Scooter, a Moped and a Mini Moped..!!
Posted below are the 2 stroke models that Royal Enfield / Enfield India (as it was also known for sometime) used to manufacture once upon a time.

Effort has been made to collect the correct information about the models. In case anyone has any correction or addtional information about the models, he/she is most welcome to correct/contribute.

Indian romance with the Royal Enfield Bullet

Indian romance with the Royal Enfield Bullet

Most in India who have grown up watching hindi movies will definitely remember the hero on a motorbike ... it had to be a Royal Enfield Bullet. Of course, I personally can't imagine Amitabh bachan riding a 150cc fat fati Rajdoot which used to always seem like gasping for dear breath! Now thats something thats real undigestable. The hero on an Enfield Bullet reflects sheer power through its classic iconic status.

Notably starting from the 1975 movie Sholay featuring Amitabh and Dharmendra on the Bullet , now 36 long years down the line even if we just look at 2011 movies, we can see the Enfield featured prominently. Infact over 5 movies have the hero or heroine using the Enfield ! Why..doesnt the Harley and other superbikes have charm ? India still loves the Royal Enfield Bullet and it has a special appeal!
